Chickn 2go

Title

Developed with Flash, Chickn 2Go is a mobile phone game consisting of 3 mini games. The target audience are casual gamers with phones capable of running flash lite, while the game challenges the players with puzzles and finger coordination tasks, as indicated with the game's catch phrase, Fingr Clickn' Good! It was also meant to be a funny and wacky twist to the fast food industry, thus all the seemingly childish misspelling setting up the mood.

It was the combined effort of 3 VFS Game Design students under Milky Entertainment to put the game together under the philosophy of being fun, creative, and passionate. Moreover, due to the nature of Chickn 2Go being a casual game running on a mobile phone, we wanted it to be able to play with one hand only, with a lot of finger movements, and at the same time, easy to pick up and play right away. After a 16 weeks production cycle, with 4 weeks being spent on pre-production and the remaining 12 weeks on production and quality assurance, the game was finally completed as planned.

With the partnership of Nokia, who kindly loaned us two of their Series 60 handsets, we were able to port our game on to the phones and obtain a better sense of the game's real performance running on the phone instead of the Flash emulator. In doing so, we also became the very first VFS student group to have a playable game on a portable device.

During the project, each member of the Milky team was given the task to develop their own mini game. My role was to be the lead programmer of our team who oversaw the major technical issues of our projects as a whole, as my major responsibilities were to write, test and debug my Actionscript code, as well as to help modify and correct the code written by other group members. Even though at the beginning of the development I had never worked with Flash and Actionscript before, but with the computer background that I had, I was able to learn them quick enough along the way to handle the work that needed to be done during development.

The design document is available here while my post-mortem is here. To download Chickn 2Go the game, please click here. Finally, you are welcome to visit milkyentertainment.com to know more about our team, and a brief trailer for the game can be played by clicking here.

The Mini-Games

Mixing Madness
Frying Frenzy
The Other Game

Mxing Madness was developed by me. It is inspired by Magic Squares, as the goal of the game is to try to duplicate the pattern on the red left column on any of the blue columns at the right.

Frying Frenzy was developed by Dennis Chin. Through the chicken mascot, Cluckie, the player needs to cook as many fried chickens as possible by catching the falling ingredients (fire, chicken and oil) in the pan, and dump them into one of the two chicken buckets.

The Other Game was developed by Melanie Genereux. The goal is to prevent the chickens from starving to death by feeding them seeds as fast as possible. When enough seeds are fed, an egg would be laid, and if it's sold before it is spoiled, points would be scored and the chicken would re-appear.

Spinball

Spinball was the first Flash game developed by Milky Entertainment, although not specifically for mobile devices. It is basically like fooseball and it requires two players to play, since there is no player vs computer mode.

Our original high concept was more than just a fooseball game, but we only had 8 weeks to work on it from scratch, so we were forced to scale back our design and stuck with the core, for we took the deadline very seriously at all time. Nonetheless, Spinball was still a success as it landed us the Best Flash Game Award at VFS' Game Design Graduation Awards Show.

The game set the team up and had us on track as it gave us a good idea about each other's strength and weakness. I was given the chance to be the lead programmer, and I volunteered to script most of the codes the made up the game as I had no experience with Flash and Actionscript at that time, and needed as much practice and experience as possible.

Spinball can be played directly in another pop up window by clicking here.
