How to Start:

Tracing your family tree is like being a detective.   You are looking for pieces of the puzzle, which will eventually put together, the whole picture.   In order to start, you must first ask yourself a basic question.

What do I want to know?

Just like putting together a puzzle, you start out with an objective.   Take the time to look around at what you already know or can find out.  Talk with a relative, examine any documents, which your relatives may have, it could be a birth or marriage certificate.   Family members will give you recollections of events in their lifetime and those of their parents.   Remember, without documentation, these are recollections and should only be used as a time frame in your search.  Our understanding of events and fact can be two different things and it is important not to be lead down the wrong path without proof.

Once you have armed yourself with this information you are well on your way to becoming the Family Historian.   In Your Roots, you will find the documents you need to search and what information they hold.  Take it step by step; don't jump generations without fully researching each level.   You will find keys, which will help you in future searches.   Given names tend to run in streaks, watch for them.

Finally, as your quest broadens, make sure you contact as many relatives as possible.   It will build bonds and provide you with more eyes and ears as you trace your family tree.

Congratulations!  You are now the Family Historian.
