Film Literacy / Film Appreciation Project
The Cinémathèque's Film Literacy / Film Appreciation Project introduces high school and post-secondary students to media literacy skills as wel l as to the history of Canadian and international filmmaking. Film screenings are followed by facilitated discussions to explore media literacy issues like: how trends in the portrayal of men and women in film effect who we are as people; how cultural diversity and ethnic differences are portrayed in film; and how the power of the media generally effects what we think about the world around us. In addition, films drawn from the history of Canadian and international cinema are presented with the aim of promoting film appreciation. Presented as a supplement and contribution to topics currently covered in their secondary school courses, Canadian and international films are introduced.
A visiting speakers program brings people from the Cinémathèque to secondary schools to direct and facilitate discussions following film/video screenings. For interested schools, the Cinémathèque's downtown theatre is also available for daily rentals and can accommodate up to 210 people.
