Deep West (1997)-shot on Betacam, available on VHS
"Deep West" is a 25 minute translation of a live stage work. It is a landscape work of the rainforest, a place where light and movement intermingle. The exterior landscape is used to reach the interior soul of a civilization born in the rain.
Three drunk men, oblivious to their clownish nature, stumble through the forest to find their car. They ignore the impending darkness. A woman appears and dances. They are entranced. They laugh and cry with her. They dream sweet dreams of death. They may never find their car as they wind their way in circles among the trees.
It is a highly visual and kinetic interdisciplinary work with five performers. It is funny and yet overpowering like the rainfilled landscape it inhabits. The stunning set by Nicola Kozakiewicz accents the smallness of man among the monolithic trees. Shot on the stage, the camera work brings the energy of a real forest to life. |
