Teaching & Residencies

JumpStart provides a wide range of teaching capabilities for short and long term workshops and residencies. With Lee Eisler's cross disciplinary skill in dance, theatre and film as well as the performers' skills in vocal and dance techniques, JumpStart is a wealth of knowledge for Art Centres and University Programs. Programs can be tailored to the specific needs of the community.

Dance/Theatre Laboratory

Lee Eisler and Robin Lynn Smith have developed a unique method of teaching Dance/Theatre and Physical Theatre. They teach performers to move like a dancer but think like an actor. Their clearly designed program stresses individual vision in both performance and creation. Choreographers, directors, actors and dancers all take part in this laboratory. Actors are trained to move and express through their bodies; dancers to access their inner emotional life. Fundamental tools for creation in physical theatre or dance theatre are taught developing concepts such as character, relationship, event and journey through physical and dance movement. From these core fundamentals the directors and choreographers create their own work. This work is mentored in a stimulating, safe atmosphere that puts the desire to learn the craft of creation, communication and performance at the forefront. A strong sense of ensemble is created in these sessions. Workshops of 1 or 2 days will give a strong sense of this type of work, while sessions of 4 weeks allow for an in depth experience and a marked sense of growth for creators and performers involved.

Apprenticeships in Art

JumpStart accepts 1 or 2 apprentices per year to work with the company in rehearsals. Apprentices work alongside the professional performers to learn the skills and demands of work in interdisciplinary arts. Interest in apprenticing with JumpStart can be expressed by sending an e-mail to JumpStart.
