Quebec, 94 minutes
Director: Andre Forcier Cast: Robin Aubert, Genevive Brouillette, Isabel Richer, David Boutin, Gaston Lepage Producer: Roger Frappier French with English subtitles Veteran director Andre Forcier is in Fellini-esque territory with his latest film, set in the strange and whimsical world of circus freaks and detailing a life-long obsession that ends in tragedy. The story begins in contemporary Montreal where the now-famous director Rex Prince (Robin Aubert) is in town to screen his autobiographical film about a tragic love affair he had almost 30 years ago with the beautiful bearded woman, Paula Paul (Genevive Brouillette). As the filmmaker reminisces about his long career with the young pro-jectionist, Forcier transports us back to a circus tent in Montreal's Belmont Park, circa 1968, where a young, broke Rex must meet the Great Znona Cyclops with the contacts to get him free film stock. Here Rex meets the woman who will forever change his life. Alas, Paula Paul is leaving that very evening to join a circus in Louisiana... Building on themes he explored in his last two films, Le vent du Wyoming and Une histoire invente, Forcier once again celebrates and humanizes the outcasts and the marginal. He has created a visually sumptuous postmodern universe which moves fluidly between past and present, and between Rex's real experiences and the fictional reality of his autobiographical film. In Forcier's confident hands we are able to follow each of the visual and narrative threads as they interweave to create a bittersweet portrait of a man whose life has been forever changed by the tragedy of love.
