"All
Canadians deserve the chance to
see the work
of their homegrown filmmakers."

    Message from the Director

Moving Pictures: Canadian Films on Tour was founded in 1993 on the belief that all Canadians deserve the chance to see the work
of their homegrown filmmakers. Following this mandate, the Tour has
been a remarkable success in every community. The enthusiasm generated has not only helped Moving Pictures grow from a three city event in BC to nine cities in four provinces, but also reveals the under-lying desire of Canadians to take interest in their own culture.

For many years the question of what is Canadian identity has rebounded across this country. Though we may never have one image to capture our identity, we can turn to our visual artists to catch a glimpse of their take on life in Canada. The wonderful array of films you are about to enjoy represent not only the culmination of years
of effort by the filmmakers but their uniqueness as citizens of one of the world's most diverse countries.

From Nova Scotia comes Thom Fitzgerald's The Hanging Garden
-a beautiful essay on returning to one's roots-something many of us have experienced.  Lynne Stopkewich's Kissed - a daring foray into the mind and obsession. Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter a testimony to the intensity of life outside of our big cities. Guy Maddin's poetry on screen with Twilight of the Ice Nymphs.

In organizing this year's Tour, I contacted most of the filmmakers across the country. I was consistently heartened by the willingness of the directors, producers, actors and distributors to be a part of Moving Pictures. Not only were they happy to have the films included
in the programme but they themselves were eager to be part of the actual event, wishing to be in attendance at the film festivals-proving that life is elsewhere-in the small towns of Canada.

I want to express my sincerest thanks to all the sponsors, organizers, volunteers, filmmakers and especially you - the filmgoer, for making
Moving Pictures possible.
