AUDIO FOR DV

In many earlier post -production models, each different element; picture, sound, FX, etc. would be sent to multiple departments and / or places, such as pisture to picture editors, sounds to audio post houses, etc. The trouble was with co-ordination: directors and editors would stuggle to make sure that their vision was maintained throughout the process. Now, with the non-linear DV computer driven process most, if not all, of the work can takes place in one environment. Increasingly, video editors are being expected to cut sound, at least in some rudimentary form.

OFF-LINE/ ON-LINE
After you've finished viewing the dailies, the "off-line" editing begins. Unlike film or video, DV off-line editing does not require that you make duplicates or dubs. Instead of using videotape duplicates, some off-line DV editors prefer to continue working in the digital domain using a low resolution (lo-rez) version of the original high resolution video masters. Given the density of digital data involved, working with high-resolution video would require terabyte-sized hard drives for editing even the shortest feature, and such storage would be prohibitively expensive.
Most DV films are now edited using either AVID or APPLE software. Both platforms fully support all the usual editing bells and whistles, although the off-line computers may not be as fully stuffed with the really expensive plug-ins as the on-line. The audio in the offline editing software may also have fewer tracks or plug-ins.
DV TO FILM TRANSFER

If required, the high rez DV can be transferred to film through
a telecine-like process. The process can also utilise proprietary
edgecode data files derived from any earlier telecine transfers
. As well, an EDL can also be used to produce a negative selection
or cut list for the neg cutter.

DAILIES
First, the dailey footage is viewed and analysed. The best takes are chosen and documented using their SMPTE timecode stamps. Next, the selected footage is batch captured in low resolution mode onto a removeable hard drive. Also, if this has been a professional shoot, a second (audio) system was very likely used. The corresponding 'best takes' from the DAT audio tapes are also analysed and documented.
